Downtown Plano-Check It Out!

Downtown Plano is a charming, unique, and fun place to visit.  Its brick streets lead to restaurants, a cozy theater, Georgia's....a long-time Farmers Market, and a lovely 5 and 1/2 acre park.
Haggard Memorial Park was developed in 1928.  It was a dream the Plano Lions' Club.  The members wished to have a park between the Interurban Rail Line and the Christian Church.  The Lions' Club set aside $1,300 to fund the park, with additional donations of $1,300 by Mrs. C. Saigling and $2,000 by "Uncle Clint," Mr. C. S. Haggard.  It was named Haggard Park in honor of its largest donor.

Haggard Park is a wonderful place to take children, as we have learned with our grandson.  It is the perfect spot to have a family picnic, attend a summer concert or visit the Interurban Museum for a view of Plano's history.  There is a pond, gazebo, playground and restrooms.  By the way, the gazebo is actually available for reservations.

We visited this great park while attending the birthday celebration for "CAR 360" this summer at the museum.  It is said that the seats are comfortable, even by today's standards.  The car is divided into two areas, serving both as a mail and passenger car.  Reservations can be made for tours of the early mode of North Texas transportation.  The tours last around 15 minutes.  In addition, the Interurban Railway Museum provides a fantastic weekly story time.  The program is geared toward young children, toddlers to preschool age.  Storytime is held each Friday at 10:30 AM.

Visit downtown Plano for a wonderful family outing.  Take in dinner or an exciting peek into the history of this thriving, popular city.
